Inside the 1920s Colonial House That’s Captivating Singapore
Facebook

Amidst the busy city life of Singapore, there are still some areas where time seems to slow down. A family living in a century-old colonial house under the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has recently become the talk of the town on social media. Built around 1920, this house offers a different experience away from the crowd of modern condos.

Although it is an old structure without a lift, there is a touch of history in every corner of this house. Nature, a quiet environment and a peaceful life are the main reasons for this family to stay here.

Centennial Establishment

This colonial house is almost a hundred years old. The structure of the house has been kept basically as it was before, because it is a rental house and there is no scope for major renovation. The wooden doors, old stairs and wide verandah make the house stand out. Although the imprint of time is clear, that is the main attraction of this house.

Such houses carry an important cultural identity in Singapore’s history. As a result, this house is not just a place to live but a living heritage.

Inside Story

The interior decoration of the house was largely spontaneous. The use of white and light colors made the house open and comfortable. Old furniture and antiques like sewing machines brought a kind of vintage atmosphere to the house.

The kitchen was originally an open space but was later built temporarily. There are small but practical bunk beds for the children. Overall, the combination of old days with modern life is clear.

Nature and Tranquility

The most favorite part of this house is the balcony and courtyard. The morning light, the sound of birds, and the presence of greenery give the residents peace of mind. Here, one can spend time with nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

At first, the night atmosphere seemed a bit scary, but later it seemed ‘too quiet’. This tranquility is one of the reasons they live here. For many, it brings back memories of the old kampong life.

Singaporean Experience

This family believes that Singaporeans should experience staying in such a house of SLA at least once if they get the chance. It is a different way of life, especially for those who love nature. Life here is much slower and more profound, away from modern conveniences.

At the same time, it gives an opportunity to see Singapore’s past up close. The preservation of such houses amidst urban development is an example of Singapore’s balanced progress.

Ever seen a 1920s SLA heritage rental in Singapore? This family moved from an HDB into this heritage unit during COVID for more space, quiet and a bit of kampong life. The boho vibe wasn’t planned, it just happened with music gear, vintage pieces and everyday family life. It’s peaceful, a little different, and nothing like modern SG living.
