On Friday, January 17, 2025, a deeply distressing incident occurred at Pasar Tani Padang Astaka, Chukai, Terengganu, Malaysia.
A 47-year-old mentally disabled man, Ahmad Nor Al Faizan Jusoh, was violently assaulted by several individuals.
Video footage of the attack, now viral, has sparked widespread condemnation and a call for justice.
A Minor Mishap Escalates Into Brutality
Ahmad, affectionately known as “Paijang,” is an OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya or Person with Disabilities) card holder.
On that fateful day, while navigating his motorcycle through the busy night market (pasar malam), Ahmad accidentally crashed into a vendor’s stall.
According to witness accounts cited by MStar, Ahmad was dangerously riding through the busy market and an individual allegedly kicked Ahmad’s motorcycle, causing him to lose control and crash into a stall, damaging goods.
The vendor demanded RM10,000 (approx. 3,032.99 SGD) in compensation, which witnesses claimed Ahmad refused to pay.
Ahmad reportedly reacted angrily, acting provocatively toward the vendor, escalating the situation.
Beaten, Dragged and Kicked
In the video, Ahmad can be seen being dragged, kicked, and beaten by multiple individuals.
His repeated apologies and pleas for water after having fried noodles poured on his head were met with further violence, including a brutal kick to the face.
Some bystanders stood idly by, while others recorded the incident on their phones.
Police Investigations and Arrests
Following the public outcry, according to Sinar Harian, Acting Kemaman District Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Wan Muhamad Wan Ja’far confirmed that five suspects aged between 18 and 60 had been detained as of Saturday (18 January).
They are being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting. Police are also seeking additional individuals for questioning and have cautioned the public against further spreading the video.
Family of the Victim Speaks Out
Ahmad’s wife, Faridah Abdul Karim, 44, expressed her devastation, stating that the violent acts against her husband were “heartless and inhumane.” She revealed that despite his mental health struggles, Ahmad has never been violent, only occasionally loud.
Faridah questioned why a peaceful resolution wasn’t sought, offering to cover the damages if approached civilly.
Their daughter, Nurul Farhana, also shared her anguish on TikTok, writing, “Rest, Abah. The world is too cruel for you.”
Additionally, other family members of the victim also shared a video of them visiting him who is currently under treatment at Kemaman Hospital.
Legal Action in Progress
The Malaysian People’s Power Movement (G57) has announced its intention to file an RM1 million (approx. 303,341 SGD) lawsuit against the assailants, aiming to deliver a strong message against the abuse of vulnerable individuals.
G57 Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar emphasized that the organization is also prepared to compensate the vendor’s losses to prevent further injustices.
Determination for Justice
In a further development, Faridah confirmed that her family has no intention of retracting the police report despite external pressures.
She stated, “I cannot forgive those who acted inhumanely, knowing my husband is mentally disabled.”
The family continues to seek justice and has received legal support offers from various organizations.
