Jerald Justin Ko, who is more popularly known as DJ JK, is a regular feature on Power 98. He has also hosted various events in Singapore, including NDP 2015. His profile on the POWER 98 websites notes that
JK’s spontaneity and wit are second to none – or so he says!
The Video
Earlier today (16 March 2022), JK posted a TikTok video titled “My new helper’s name is NAO HIA” that attracted mixed reactions. In a kindergarten-level joke that punches down, he compared his domestic helper’s name to a Hokkien vulgarity.
While some saw some semblance of humour, others found that JK was being disrespectful. A transcript of the video is appended below:
JK: “Our new helper. What’s your name?”
H: “Nao Hia”
JK: “Nao Hia?”
H: “Ya”
JK: “You’re joking.”
JK: “Say Again”
H: “Nao Hia”
JK “Nao Hia… Alright, welcome Nao Hia.’
JK expressed amusement at the helper’s name, and said “you’re joking!”. He then asked her to repeat it. In the second part of the video, after JK asked her to repeat her name, the helper was visibly shy and walked away from the camera.
JK also stated that the first question he asked her whether her surname was “nin”, with reference to the Hokkien expletive.
