65-Year-Old Woman in Pakistan Ends Life Due to High Electricity Bill

In a heart-wrenching turn of events in Gujranwala, Punjab, Pakistan, 65-year-old Razia Bibi from Gujranwala took her own life having to use her savings for surgery to pay a huge amount of electricity bill. The bill, which was ₹10,000 (approximately SGD 48), was far more than Bibi had expected, and it meant she had to use the money she had saved for a much-needed hernia operation.

A Desperate Choice

According to ARY News, Razia Bibi had been saving for a long time to pay for her hernia surgery. But when she received the unexpectedly high electricity bill, she had no choice but to use that money to cover the bill. Her son, Usman, told the police, “My mother was a hernia patient and had saved money for her operation. After receiving the electric bill of Rs 10,000, she paid it with the money saved for her surgery and later committed suicide.”

Footage and Investigations

On the day of the tragedy, Bibi left home saying she was going to buy medicine. Instead, she jumped into a nearby drain. Despite her daughter’s attempt to save her, Bibi was not rescued in time. Footage capturing the moments leading up to the tragedy has surfaced, highlighting the severity of the situation. The Gujranwala Police have launched an investigation to understand the circumstances that led to Razia Bibi’s heartbreaking decision.

In a related incident reported on August 30, 2023, a 35-year-old man from Dijkot city, Punjab, also died by suicide after being unable to pay an exorbitant electricity bill of Rs 40,000 (approximately SGD 1,000). The man, Muhammad Hamza, had been struggling financially, and the bill pushed him to a breaking point.
