At multiple junctures during the 9-day Presidential Campaign, including the live “debate” on CNA, Ng Kok Song made reference to the elusive “fifth race” in Singapore.
@ratemymp I only know we have 5 stars but what are the 5 races? #tiktoksg #sgtiktok #sgfyp #tiktokfyp #ratemymp #tiktoksofsg #singapore #singaporetiktok #sgpolitics #sgparliament #singaporepolitics #singaporeparliament #singaporepresidentialelection2023 #ngkoksong #ngkoksong2023 #singaporepresident #singaporepresidentialelection #sgpe2023 #singaporepresidentialelection2023
What is the Fifth Race?
While some thought it was a slip of the tongue when it was first uttered, the fact that it continued throughout the campaign could only mean either “genuine belief” or a running gag which his PR team thought would be good for publicity.
Many were amused and curious by the repeated references to the 5th race. There was speculation as to whether we were talking about extra-terrestrial beings or the upcoming F1 race. Some wondered aloud Kok Song knew something that the rest of us didn’t.
Thanks to the creative efforts of Stan Ganesh and his team at SEMMA, we may finally have a breakthrough.
Now, we still have no clue what the fifth race is, but we can now head down to the SEMMA bistro to find out what it tastes like.
Cocktails inspired by Presidential Candidates at Semma!
Although the Presidential Elections are over, diners can continue voting with their wallets (and their livers) at SEMMA Bistro through their 3 cocktails that were inspired by Presidential Candidates, Ng Kok Song, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Tan Kin Lian!
As a business owner, I look forward to having a little fun with whatever I put out to people. I have always strived to bring a little innovation and excitement, especially to the menus served at my establishments.
As a quip, I did this at my previous bar, Escobar – we introduced the Trump & Kim cocktails which were a hit with the customers. So I thought, “how much further can we spice things up at an Indian restaurant?” Have your own “elections” HAHA!

Meet your 3 candidates!
Pretty Mumbai is a cocktail that is inspired by Tan Kin Lian’s controversial remarks on “pretty girls” and feeling like he was in “mumbai” when he boarded bus 857.
Give all your attention to this candidate who took all the trouble to look this pretty. Dressed in an attractive cranberry vodka with a dash of triple sec, topped off with some traditional spices to make you feel like you’re in Mumbai – this candidate promises to bring back our trust that good mixologists exist, and give us hope that we too, can be pretty.
A testament to the fact that, good mixologists do exist, and a delightful reminder that we can all be pretty. This cocktail is like Mumbai itself, dressed in an alluring cranberry vodka, with a flirtatious dash of triple sec, and a sprinkle of traditional spices that will have your taste buds campaigning for more.
Up next, it is the mystery-solving 5th Race that features vodka, zesty lime, and watermelon.
- Uniting vodka with zesty lime and finishing with a heart of watermelon, this cocktail leaves your five fingers feeling like they could be four. Committed to sustainability, straws are available only upon request, symbolising Singaporeans’ shared commitment to a greener future.
A candidate so refreshing that you will feel 30 years younger. The vodka, united with the lime and topped off with a heart of watermelon leaves our five fingers feeling like it should be four. With a strong focus on sustainability, straws are only available upon request for this candidate – as we stand united for a lime green future ahead.
SEMMA’s mixologists warned that this drink could leave your five fingers feeling like they could be for (they may also make you think about the 5th race instead of the 4 official races in Singapore 😉
Finally, we have the drink inspired by the President-Elect, the Pineapple Ong Lai!
A delightful blend of pineapple, gin, and rum, Pineapple Ong Lai is simple yet captivating. Respectful to all tastes, it’s an ode to the classic combination of pineapple and spirits. As you sip, you might see stars forming on your glass and it just might just inspire your own political deliberations, making it the perfect election night companion.
Stan Ganesh shared that the Pineapple Ong Lai was the most popular drink amongst patrons.
“The most popular one out of the 3 has been the Pineapple Ong Lai. It has a beautiful blend of pineapple, gin, and rum. This could be something that appeals to a general audience. I personally think it could be more popular because we had a lot of patrons who were excited about and rooting for Tharman.” – Stan Ganesh, the Owner of SEMMA Bistro
