On a Scoot flight scheduled to depart from Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport for Singapore on Tuesday, two passengers suffered injuries, apparently as a result of a portable charger catching fire.

Angie Ton, 28, had plans to transit through Singapore to Malaysia before the incident. She told the media that the whole commotion begins after the plane had taxied for the runway in preparation for take-off.
Just before the plane was about take-off, a passenger started to hear exclamations behind her. As she turned around, she observed blazing orange flames and terrified faces.
Which was when a flight attendant swiftly rushed to the rescue, immediately the attendant was directing the passengers away from the scene and calming the minds of everyone. Another attendant raced in with a fire extinguisher and put out the fire within three minutes.
The entire cabin was overwhelmed with smoke, but the cabin crew helped to make sure that the ventilators were turned on and the air within the cabin cleared quickly. Ms Ton also added that the cabin crews were conversant, and they knew exactly what there were doing, she commended on their diligence and praised their preparation and composure in the time of need.
Scoot added that the owner of the power bank and his partner, received mild burns to their fingers and they have received the necessary medical attention.
The captain was still planning to for a take off after the engineers have done their due diligence and rendered that the plane was still good to go as only the carpets were damaged. All these happened in a span of three hours after the fire and smoke was cleared.
During the long wait from the incident, many passengers began to grumble. They were simply trapped for hours while information was withheld from them. The passengers’ feedback that they wanted someone to inform them of anything because they were all running late and had other plans.
However, the local authorities did not allow for to take off after three hours of waiting time, it was then announced that the flight would be postponed, and Scoot would offer the affected customers lodging with meals.
A passenger also shared that the airline provided a complete refund for the flight. A night’s stay at a hotel with breakfast, lunch, and transfer to the airport was offered to passengers who wanted to board the flight the following day in exchange for their decision, or S$100 if they already had lodging in Taiwan.
In retrospect, a passenger asserted that the plane would have been in mid air if the incident took place a few minutes later. Perhaps a blessing in disguise after all. She also added that both the airline and passengers weren’t at fault for this incident, and that maybe the SOPs on quality of power banks there were allowed on board the flight should be reviewed. Do you think powerbanks should be declared before any flights?
